Vol. 2—No. 51 U. S. Navy Pre-Flight School, Chapel Hill, N. C. Saturday, September 2, 1944 Third Annual Military Mass To Be Celebrated Tomorrow Public Invited To Attend Ceremony In Outdoor Theater The third annual military pon tifical field Mass will be celebrated tomorrow morning in Forest Theatre at 1030 with His Ex cellency, the Most Reverend Eu gene J. McGuinness, D.D., Bishop of Raleigh, officiating. Following the Mass, the Bishop will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation. Assisting Bishop McGuinness will be the Rev. Vincent Stokes, of Greensboro, as deacon, and the Rev. Timothy Fry, of Atchison, Kan., as subdeacon. The Rev. John Brown of Pinehurst, Vice Chancellor of the Diocese of Raleigh, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The speaker for the solemn occasion will be the Rev. Paul A. McNally, S.J., director of the Astronomical Observatory, Georgetown University, Washing ton, D. C. Preceding the Mass, a proces sion will form in the rear of the theatre and advance to the altar. The procession headed by the cen- ser-bearer will be composed of an escort of honor of the Catholic of ficers, cadets, and the visiting clergy. Lt. Comdr. Henry Gannon and Lt. Comdr. Edward George will serve as a special guard of honor, while Lieut. Thomas Gorman will be the military aide to Bishop Mc Guinness. Walter Brownback, son of Lieut. Walter Brownback, will be the Bishop’s page. The Pre-Flight School band will play before the service. The music for the Mass will be ren dered by the Pre-Flight School Catholic Choir under the super vision of the Rev. Edward Sulli van. The Mass “Cum Jubilo” will be sung, while the processional wiU be “Ecce Sacerdos Magnus” by —Bachrach Photo Bishop McGuinness Matthew Amoros and the offer tory number will be “Veni Jesu Amor Mi” by Cherubini. Guests of honor for the cere mony will be Lt. Comdr. James P. Raugh, Commanding Officer; Lt. Comdr. Howard L. Hamilton, Ex ecutive Officer; Dr. Frank P. Gra ham, Dean R. B. House, William D. Carmichael, and Harry Comer, of the University of North Caro lina. All Pre-Flight School personnel and the public are invited to attend this service. In event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in Hill Music Hall. The 0615 Mass will not be held tomorrow, but Holy Communion will be distributed at 0700 in Ger- rard Hall. Crew Picnic Today At Country Club Pork barbecue, southern style, will be on the table at the crew picnic scheduled to start at 1700 today at the Chapel Hill Country Club. Refreshments will be served throughout the picnic, with the meal coming at approximately 1830. Music will be provided by the Pre-Flight School band. 6-Day Field Trip Planned For 46 Survival Instructors A six-day trip through the sur rounding countryside will feature the coming week’s instruction in survival training for the 46 of ficers now undergoing special training here. Emphasis will be on learning survival techniques, preparing training camps, setting up courses, and building demon stration areas. During the past week the group received classroom instruction, went on short trips, and witnessed special movies. The purpose of the instructor’s school in survival is to broaden the background of officers now teaching some type of survival, so they will be familiar with all phases, and to train additional of ficers to meet ci’rrent and antici pated needs. Various phases of the survival training program will be featured in next week’s Cloudbuster, Swing* Orchestra To Play Tomorrow At Concert The swing orchestra will share the musical spotlight with the regular Pre-Flight School band at the sixth concert of the season to morrow at 1630 in Forest Theatre. In the first part of the program the entire band will play the march from Wagner’s Tannhamer, the II Guarany overture by Gomez, and Grafulla’s Washington Grays march. Members of the band’s glee club will entertain with I’ve Been A-Listening and Good News. The swing section will take over during the latter half of the pro gram with Swanee River, Poin- ciana, Snowfall, Goodnight Wher ever You Are, and The Man I Love. C. S. Seeley, Chief Musician, will direct the concert band, while George Roberts, Mus3c, will lead the swing section. Senior Battalion Loses Competition For First Time For the first time since the new battalion competition started in early Summer, the senior bat talion failed to win top honors over the two weeks period. It was the 68th who upset the applecart, scoring 241 points while the 54th, in second place, had 216. The 57th had 183, the 55th 144, and the 56th had 76. Prior to the Sports Program competition on Wednesday night three battalions figured in the fight for top honors. Both the 57th and 58th Battalions had 135 points to their credit, while the 54th had 125. The 58th defeated the 54th in boxing, 10 to 7, defeated the 55th in wrestling, 29 to 28, and the 54th in swimming, 40 to 39. In the soc cer competition, the 54th won over the 56th, 4 to 2, and the 55th de feated the 54th in track, 45 to 42. From start to finish all the compe tition was close. The last wrest ling bout of the evening decided the outcome of that sport, and the relays in track and swimming de cided the winners there. The winning battalion regis tered 50 points in military, 75 in academic, 10 in class athletics, and 106 in sports program competi tion.
